Although the Bitterroot Valley in southwestern Montana is not considered a traditional homeland of the Oceti Sakowin, it was a place our Ancestors frequently traveled. The region held deep significance for many Nations and was known for its abundant buffalo, fishing waters, trade routes, and medicinal plants such as bitterroot. These lands also connected communities through seasonal travel, gathering, and ceremony.
The Bitterroot Valley is the ancestral homeland of the Salish people, whose enduring relationship with the land continues today. This painting honors the beauty, movement, and interconnected histories tied to this sacred landscape.
